The Proven Science of Chitosan

Chitosan is widely regarded as being a non-toxic, biologically compatible polymer.

Chitosan showed a strong effect against periodontal pathogens through the inhibition of biofilm formation.

Chitosan is shown to have an antimicrobial activity against P. gingivalis.

Chitosan was shown to interrupt the inflammatory pathways in vitro and in vivo in multiple tissue types and delivery methods.

Advanced Delivery System

Frequently Asked Questions

  • PerioStōm is an FDA-cleared, non-drug, proprietary formulation of chitosan microspheres intended for the protection of oral mucosa due to irritation, trauma, or following iatrogenic procedures such as scaling and root planing.

  • The shellfish proteins are removed through a chemical process to derive chitin and chitosan. We have not seen any literature pointing to an allergic reaction to chitosan due to its protein content, and to the contrary, several studies have shown that those with a shellfish allergy did not have a reaction when exposed to chitosan. It is advisable to state that chitosan is originally derived from shellfish, and we leave it to clinicians and their patients to make the final decision.

  • The iodine found in shrimp is mostly in their organic tissue, not in the chitin of their exoskeleton. Therefore, when chitin is extracted and processed into chitosan, the iodine that was present in the shrimp's flesh is not retained in the chitosan.

  • PerioStōm is deposited near or at the base of the periodontal pocket. Upon delivery, it absorbs saliva and turns into a bioadherent gel which dissolves over time.

  • There has been very little published data on the use of chitosan and pregnancy or nursing. We leave it to clinicians and their patients to make the final decision on using PerioStōm when pregnant or nursing.

  • D4381: Localized delivery of antimicrobial agents, per tooth. Each insurance plan is different, and it's best to check with a provider to see what is covered. D4381 is a per tooth code. The fee submitted for a tooth should include all sites.

  • PerioStōm is safe to use around dental implants, as research shows its ingredients do not cause any negative interaction with titanium.
