Sex, Drugs & Oral Cancer™

If you are reading this newsletter, you are more educated than the average dentist on oral cancer and the associated risk factors. However, the question remains: How do you talk to your patients about oral cancer? A recent oral cancer screening survey by Proofs magazine speaks about the Conversation We Should All Be Having with our patients. So, Let's Talk About ... Sex, Drugs & Oral Cancer™

Most dental professionals are aware of the recent trends in oral cancer and the associated risk factors:

Sex: Sexually Transmitted HPV (human papillomavirus)
Drugs: Tobacco use, alcohol consumption

However, are you having these conversations with your patients about these risk factors?

76% of dental offices speak with their patients about smoking cessation
34% of dental offices talk to patients about alcohol moderation or cessation
48% of dental offices talk to patients about the link between HPV and oral cancer

"The most interesting about the risk-factor conversaion is that more dentists are willing to have the potentially embarrasing conversations about the link between HPV and oral cancer than are willing to talk about the link between drinking and oral cancer."

Is the conversation awkward...Yes! But you are the doctors of the mouth. As we talk about during our Team Trainings, you are the "Oral Cancer Experts". 66% of people that talk about HPV and Oral Cancer with their patients admit it the conversation makes them uncomfrotable, but it has to be done!

So...Have the conversation -

Let's Talk About... Sex, Drugs & Oral CancerTM ...Your Patients Need to know!
