Sjogren's Syndrome

What is Sjogren’s Syndrome?
Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder most commonly identified by the complaint of dry eyes and a dry mouth.

What causes Sjogren’s Syndrome?
Sjogren's Syndrome is caused by a decrease in the production of lubrication from the mucous membranes and moisture secreting glands in those areas. This disorder can be a standalone condition but it is often found with other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Although you can develop Sjogren's syndrome at any age, this disease tends to most often affect women over 40 years of age.

What are the symptoms of Sjogren's Syndrome?
Since there is no cure for Sjogren’s the treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. The two main symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome are dry eyes and a dry mouth because these are the first glands to be targeted by the immune system. The complications associated with Sjogren’s syndrome include dental cavities, yeast infections and vision problems.

Does Sjogren's Syndrome have a treatment or medication?
Treatments for Sjogren's Syndrome are generally palliative in nature, but there are some medications available to minimize the discomfort. Eye drops are used to soothe eye dryness and topical fluorides/anti caries products can be used to protect against cavities. Fortunately, there is another product available to soothe the discomfort associated with dry mouth (xerostomia). SalivaMAX, a supersaturated calcium phosphate, is a prescription solution that the patient swishes with daily to provide comfort. The unique chemistry of this therapy replenishes the insufficient salivary ions thereby allowing the saliva to function as intended.
